It really depends on what kind of a perosn he is. If he is a loyal and comitted husband, then perhaps he can be just flirting in a harmless way, to spice up his own macho ego. If he is more of a hot-shot, then perhaps he does this with many women on a regular basis. Like you said, you don't know his marital status so it's very hard to come to a conclusion. Remember, subtle flirting most often doesn't mean anything serious. It is just a man's nature.
